Tired of working with unmanageable quantities of CP? This document provides instructions on how to extract the active alkaloid, 5-MeO-W, from those gallons of CP you've collected, and crystallize it into a more manageable (albeit slightly more unstable) form. If you haven't had at least some chemistry lab experience, I suggest finding a friend who does, as some of the steps below can prove tricky. The only real drawback to these procedures is that they eliminate the particular "flavor" of trip that each cat species can provide, and some find that the end product is overly intense for their tastes. You have been warned.
Materials Needed:
4L pure CP
Distilled water
250mL Saturated NaHCO3 Solution
500mL Concentrated HCl
1L 50% NaOH Solution
500mL Dichloromethane
200mL Isopropanol
100mL H2SO4
NaCl (may not be necessary)
Silica GelEquipment Needed:
Large Glass or Teflon Coated Pot (or a 5L boiling flask)
1L Separatory Funnel
Various sized beakers (improvise)
Vacuum source (water aspirator or hand pump is fine)Step 1: 4L of CP would be a pain to work with, or you wouldn't be following these directions, so the first step is to evaporate it down to a volume of about 500mL. Just pour it into a large pot and boil until the volume is about 1/8th of what you started with. Accuracy isn't too important at this stage, just don't let all the liquid boil away, and make sure you get the volume down to around 500mL.
Step 2: The 5-MeO-W in your concentrated CP is in freebase form, because of the very basic nature of the CP (smell that ammonia?). You could extract with the DCM now, but you would also pull many of the other toxic and undesired alkaloids over with the 5-MeO-W, so an acid-base extraction must be performed. Pour your CP concentrate into a large beaker, and slowly add concentrated HCl until a pH of 2 is reached. This will form the water-soluble hydrochloride salt of the 5-MeO-W and neutralize the basic CP, causing unwanted organics to fall out of the solution. Pour this into your 1L separatory funnel, then extract 2x with 100mL DCM. If the second DCM wash is very dirty or strongly colored, you may want to perform a third wash. If an emulsion forms during any separation step, try adding some NaCl to the water to break it up. Discard these DCM washes or save and redistill.
Step 3: With the liquid phase still in the separatory funnel, slowly add 50% NaOH solution until pH reaches 10 or so. DO NOT overbasify or you may cause a breakdown of the 5-MeO-W molecule into very toxic byproducts. You should now see a yellowish oil falling out of solution to the bottom of the funnel. Extract 2x with 100mL and 1x with 50mL of DCM. Save the DCM extracts and discard the water layer. Pour the combined extracts back into the funnel, and wash first with saturated Sodium Bicarbonate solution, then with distilled water. You now have fairly pure 5-MeO-W freebase in DCM.
Step 4: Evaporate the DCM off under a fan and collect the oily residue. If you're planning on smoking the 5-MeO-W, you're done. The residue will be of sufficient purity for this route. If you're a stickler for purity, you can vacuum distill and collect the highest boiling fraction. Since smoking is such an unpredictable route of ingestion, you'll probably want to form the hydrochloride salt instead. Add the residue from the above step directly to 100mL of Isopropanol. Vacuum filter through a bed of dried Silica Gel to remove any water present, then set up for gassing with HCl. Make sure to connect a drying tube and water trap between your gas generator and your bubbler tube. If you're unsure on how to generate dry HCl gas, see instructions on http://www.rhodium.ws.
Within a few minutes you should see clusters of off-white/yellow crystals start to form, and soon the flask should be thick with them. Gas until no more crystal generation is noted, then vacuum filter. Wash the filter cake with two 50mL portions of Isopropanol, and air dry. Yield should be around 5g of glistening yellowish needles, much better looking than the powder obtained by simply evaporating the CP, and almost 99% pure if you performed all steps correctly.
